Department of Drug Administration bans sale of six antibiotics

KATHMANDU: The Department of Drug Administration has announced a ban on the retail sale of six different types of antibiotics.

In a notice issued today, the department stated that antibiotics, including meropenem, colistin, polymaxim B, and vancomycin, are now prohibited from being sold through retail pharmacies.

According to the department, the decision was made in response to rising concerns over the misuse of reserve group antibiotics.

Data shows that the consumption of these antibiotics has been increasing, while there is a lack of proper antibiotic surveillance regarding their use in livestock. Additionally, prescribers, drug sellers, and users have been found to lack adequate knowledge about the classification of antibiotics, leading to potential misuse.

The department emphasized that the ban aims to curb the inappropriate use of critical antibiotics and protect public health. Pharmacies and healthcare professionals have been urged to adhere strictly to the new regulations to prevent further misuse and ensure responsible antibiotic practices.
