Tharu community to celebrate 2-day Maghi festival in Tundikhel

KATHMANDU: The Tharu community is celebrating the Maghi festival in Tundikhel, Kathmandu, on January 13 and 14 this year.

Coordinator of the Tharu National Maghi Festival and newly elected president of the Tharu Kalyanakarini Sabha, Premilal Chaudhary, said that the two-day celebration aims to promote Tharu culture, language, and public awareness.

“We have been celebrating the Maghi festival in Kathmandu since 2059 BS. As it marks the New Year for the Tharu community, we have decided to extend the celebration to two days,” he said.

Prime Minister KP Oli is scheduled to inaugurate the festival. This year’s theme is “Our Campaign to Preserve, Enhance, and Promote Tharu Culture: A Call for Proportional Inclusive Access for All.”

Various subcommittees have been formed to ensure the festival’s success.

More than 20 Tharu organizations are collaborating to organize the event, which will feature over 100 stalls offering Tharu cuisine, handicrafts, exhibitions, and book displays.

As part of the festivities, a motorcycle rally will take place on January 11, which will start from Tinkune at 7 a.m. and conclude at Bhrikutimandap.

On January 14, a cultural tableau rally showcasing traditional Tharu attire, musical instruments, and banners will begin at 10 a.m. from New Road, Basantapur, proceeding through Ratna Park, Shahid Gate, and Sundhara before arriving at Tundikhel for the main ceremony.
