Maoist Center demands judicial probe into Gen-Z protest crackdown

KATHMANDU: The main opposition party, the Maoist Center, has demanded the formation of an independent, impartial, and high-level judicial commission to investigate Monday’s incident during the Gen Z-led protest.

The demand was made during an emergency meeting of the party’s office bearers, held late Monday evening after the party suspended its public awareness campaign and returned to Kathmandu.

Vice Chair and Spokesperson Agni Prasad Sapkota said the party was seriously concerned about the recent developments in the country.

“We must acknowledge the demands of the Gen Z generation, particularly their call to end corruption and their opposition to the government’s decision to shut down social media,” Sapkota said. “We urge all sides to ensure that the movement remains peaceful and conducted with restraint.”

The Maoist Center expressed condolences to those who lost their lives in Monday’s protest and extended wishes for the speedy recovery of the injured.

The party also called on the government to declare the deceased as martyrs and announced that condolence gatherings would be organized at all local levels across the country at 5 PM on Tuesday.

Sapkota further stated that the Maoist Center believes the current crisis must be addressed through unity and dialogue among patriotic and pro-change democratic forces.
