Dr. Deepak Aryal appointed TU vice-chancellor

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, in his capacity as the Chancellor of Tribhuvan University (TU), has appointed Dr. Deepak Aryal as the new Vice-Chancellor of Nepal’s oldest and largest university.

The appointment follows a recommendation made by a three-member committee led by Minister for Education, Science, and Technology Raghuji Pant.

The committee had shortlisted three candidates — acting Vice-Chancellor Dr. Khadga KC, former Dean of the Faculty of Science Dr. Vinil Aryal, and former Director General of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology Dr. Deepak Aryal — and submitted the names to the Prime Minister on July 7.

Dr. Aryal’s name was selected from this list, and he will now formally lead Tribhuvan University, which has been without a permanent Vice-Chancellor since Dr. Kesharjung Baral resigned on April 10.

Following Dr. Baral’s resignation, PM Oli had temporarily assigned the position to Education Chief Dr. Khadga KC for up to three months until a permanent appointment was made.

Dr. Aryal is widely regarded for his expertise in climate science and hydrology, having previously headed the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology. His appointment is seen as a move toward strengthening TU’s research and academic governance, especially in the sciences.
