Supreme Court orders reinstatement of Hitendra Dev Shakya as NEA Managing Director

The Supreme Court on Monday has issued a mandamus order to reinstate Hitendra Dev Shakya as the Managing Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority, who had been dismissed by Minister for Energy Kulman Ghising. A joint bench of Justices Nahakul Subedi and Shrikant Paudel issued the mandamus order in favor of Shakya, who is currently serving at the Water and Energy Commission.

Communications Minister Jagdish Kharel inspects Ncell office, discusses post-Gen-Z restoration

Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel on Monday visited the Ncell office in Nakkhu to assess the damage caused during the recent Gen-Z movement. Ncell Chair Satish Lal Acharya and CEO Michael Foley welcomed the minister and briefed him about the losses sustained during the protests. Ncell’s central office in Lainchaur was vandalized, looted, and set on fire on September 9, during which the company suffered damages estimated at around Rs 650 million. Since then, Ncell has been providing services from its Nakkhu office.

Fireworks expected as Royals, Kings lock horns in crucial NPL Qualifier in bid for direct final spot

The league stage of the Nepal Premier League (NPL) second season has concluded, paving the way for the playoffs beginning Tuesday. The first Qualifier will see the top two Sudurpaschim Royals and Biratnagar Kings clash for a direct berth in the final. The match will start at 4 PM Tuesday at the TU International Cricket Ground. The winner will secure a straight entry into the final, while the losing side will get a second chance against the winner of the Eliminator match between Kathmandu Gorkhas and Lumbini Lions.

Ishwar Pokharel submits document ahead of UML 11th General Convention

Senior Vice-Chair Ishwar Pokharel has submitted a prepared document to General Secretary Shankar Pokharel ahead of the 11th General Convention of the Nepal Communist Party (UML). The submission comes after Party Chair KP Sharma Oli did not visit the party office in Chyasal. Sources say Oli is currently holding discussions with party leaders at his residence in Gundu. Alongside Ishwar Pokharel , other leaders present during the submission included Vice-Chair Surendra Pandey, Yubaraj Gyawali, Bishnu Paudel, Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai, and leader Karna Thapa.

UML Vice-chair Surendra Pandey warns party is shrinking due to over-centralized decision-making

CPN-UML Vice-chair Surendra Pandey said the party is gradually drifting away from the people as decision-making becomes concentrated in the hands of a few leaders. Speaking at an interaction on the upcoming General Convention in Kathmandu, Pandey said the UML is narrowing, shrinking, and moving toward isolation, warning that the trend is weakening the party’s democratic character.

Four Nepalis among 25 killed in Goa nightclub fire

Twenty-five people, including four Nepali nationals, were killed in a devastating fire at an Indian nightclub in Goa’s Arpora area, authorities said on Monday. Nepal’s Ambassador to India, Shankar Sharma, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved families. In a statement, he also wished for the speedy recovery of those injured.

Hetauda residents, businesses clear debris after road expansion demolitions; SC order halts further works

Homeowners and business operators in Hetauda have begun clearing debris from structures demolished during the main road expansion drive. The Road Division Office had bulldozed structures built within the designated road boundary and piled up bricks, iron rods, zinc sheets, furniture, and other remnants along the roadside. Since early morning, locals and business owners have been removing scrap, dismantling remaining wall sections, and taking out shutters from damaged buildings.

NCP to hold assembly in Kathmandu on January 20

The Nepali Communist Party (NCP) has announced that it will organize a “Unity Message Assembly” at Bhrikutimandap on January 20. A meeting of the party’s Bagmati Province office held at Paris Danda on Thursday decided the details of the event. According to the party, the assembly will be jointly organized by the Bagmati Province Committee, the Contact Coordination Committee, and the Special Province Committee.

Rally kicks off in Kathmandu for Shram Sanskriti Party’s district expansion, Harka Sampang to address assembly

The Shram Sanskriti Party has launched a rally in Kathmandu as part of its organizational expansion in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Lalitpur districts, accompanied by a scheduled address from party chair Harka Sampang. The rally began from Hardik Hotel in Bagbazar and will conclude with an assembly at Sifal Ground, according to the organizers.

Assistant Sub-Inspector arrested for allegedly killing his four-month-old son

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Nepal Police Pushkar Karki has been arrested on the charge of killing his own four-month-old son. According to Kathmandu District Police Range spokesperson SP Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, Karki was arrested from Nagdhunga while fleeing after allegedly murdering his infant son at Sinamangal, Kathmandu.

Gold price rises by Rs 700 per tola; silver slips Rs 20

The price of gold increased by Rs 700 per tola on Monday, according to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers Association. The price of fine gold has been set at Rs 252,900 per tola, compared to Rs 252,200 per tola on the previous trading day. Silver, however, declined by Rs 20 per tola on Monday. It is being traded at Rs 3,585 per tola, down from Rs 3,605 per tola a day earlier.

Singha Durbar’s historic Gallery Hall retrofitting unlikely to be completed on time

The retrofitting work on the historic Gallery Hall building,  a structure that stands as a witness to Nepal’s parliamentary history and was damaged in the 2015 earthquake, is unlikely to be completed within the planned deadline. The Special Building Construction Project Implementation Office under the Ministry of Urban Development had earlier signed a contract with Prera Nirman Sewa Pvt. Ltd. to carry out the retrofitting work. The agreement had given the company until November 2025 to complete the restoration and allocated an estimated budget of around Rs 390 million for the project.

Nagdhunga–Naubise road to close for five hours daily

The government has decided to partially close the Nagdhunga–Naubise–Malekhu road section for five hours a day to expedite ongoing construction works. The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport had recently held discussions with stakeholders after contractors reported that heavy and continuous traffic was preventing construction from progressing at the expected pace.
