KATHMANDU: The Lumbini–Nepal Mini Marathon is set to take place in Thailand in May 2026 to mark Buddha Jayanti, with the aim of promoting Lumbini—the birthplace of Lord Gautam Buddha—on the international stage.
According to the Embassy of Nepal in Thailand, the marathon will be held in the third week of May and will feature 10-kilometer and 5-kilometer race categories. Officials said the event seeks to highlight Nepal’s cultural and spiritual significance while strengthening Nepal–Thailand ties.
The Embassy on Sunday organized an interaction program in Bangkok with key stakeholders to prepare for the event. Representatives from Nepal Airlines, the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) Thailand National Coordination Council, the People of Nepali Origin Association, the Thai–Nepal Association, the Thai–Nepal Friendship Association, Nepali professionals working in UN bodies, and Nepali and Thai entrepreneurs attended the meeting.
The meeting also decided to form a Mini Marathon Organizing Committee comprising representatives of organizations dedicated to fostering Nepal–Thailand friendship.
According to the Embassy, the event is expected to promote Nepal’s tourism, culinary traditions, cultural heritage, exportable goods, and, most importantly, Lumbini as the sacred birthplace of Lord Buddha.
