Mahesh Basnet slams govt, challenges arrest of KP Oli

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML politburo member Mahesh Basnet has issued a strong challenge to the government, daring it to arrest former Prime Minister and UML Chairman KP Oli.

Speaking at a press conference held at the UML party office in Chyasal on Wednesday, Basnet lashed out at the government in response to recent developments involving allegations and investigations against party leaders.

“If you have the courage, arrest KP Oli,” Basnet said. His remarks come a day after some leaders of the Gen-Z movement filed a police complaint against Basnet, accusing him of suppressing the Gen-Z youth protests. The police have since forwarded the complaint to the inquiry commission led by Gauri Bahadur Karki.

In response, Basnet escalated his rhetoric, saying that targeting Oli and other UML leaders was politically motivated. He also expressed anger over the government’s anti-corruption investigations, particularly those targeting UML figures.

Basnet argued that those currently in power should also be scrutinized. He named Finance Minister Rameshwor Khanal and Energy Minister Kulman Ghising, demanding investigations into their actions as well. “Those who rose to power through the support of the youth should be investigated first,” he said.

Dismissing corruption allegations against himself, Basnet added, “We’re not claiming to be saints. We never said we were bathed in milk. If Mahesh Basnet is corrupt, take action. But if not, can you keep labeling him as corrupt?”

He also referenced recent remarks made by KP Oli on the Gen-Z Youth Movement at an event, noting that other party leaders will speak publicly on the matter soon. “Senior leaders of the party will express their views tomorrow,” he said.
