HoR meeting will proceed despite opp’n protests: Speaker

KATHMANDU: The House of Representatives (HoR) meeting will continue even if the opposition protests over the visit visa controversy, Speaker Devraj Ghimire has said.

Following discussions with the chief whips of the three major parties at Singha Durbar, Nepali Congress Chief Whip Shyam Kumar Ghimire informed that the House session will go ahead regardless of whether an agreement is reached with the opposition.

He noted that while cooperation from the opposition would ensure smoother proceedings, the meeting would still be held amid protests if necessary. He added that the opposition has not yet relented from its demands.

Similarly, CPN-UML Chief Whip Mahesh Bartaula stated that the previous practice of adjourning meetings through public notices will not be repeated.

He emphasized that the adjournment by notice, as done in the last session, will not continue. He said discussions on the budget will commence and the Civil Service Bill will be presented.

According to him, the full parliamentary process will now move forward, and the opposition is expected to cooperate.

Speaker Ghimire expressed disappointment that repeated adjournments intended to create space for consensus among parties had failed to produce any resolution.
