KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has prepared a draft of ‘National Artificial Intelligence Policy, 2081’ with an objective of systematic development of the artificial intelligence and encouraging its use in the country.
The ministry has asked suggestion on the draft of the policy. The policy has set a goal of bringing transformative change in socio-economic and administrative sector of the country through the medium of AI.
“This policy is needed to increase the use of AI technology, to encourage research and development, to improve good governance and public service, to create new business opportunity, to promote innovation and to lessen risk through regulation of AI”, reads the draft.
The policy has a potential for socio-economic transformation through the use of AI in education, health, transport, tourism, agriculture, finance, natural disaster management, art and entertainment sector increasing AI literacy and efficiency, making easy access of data and building data ecosystem, the draft mentioned.
The main goal of the policy is to promote innovation and entrepreneurship and contributing in gross domestic product through strengthening of existing structures and sectoral coordination, mentioned the draft.
The draft of AI outlines key objectives aimed at fostering secured and sustainable AI ecosystem, produce skilled human resources in this sector, promote research, innovation and entrepreneurship.
The AI policy, as mentioned in the draft, also seeks to improve and enhance public service delivery by leveraging AI. The draft includes a provision for regulation and monitoring of the AI for its safe application.
Advancing digital infrastructures, data management and promote sectoral growth among others remain the area of focus in the draft. The draft envisages formation of the AI Regulatory Council, National AI Centre and AI Excellence centres for effective implementation of the proposed policy.
The Council will provide guidance for the development and use of AI while the Centre will coordinate the development, growth and the use of the AI, the draft stated.
Due to the growing global use and influence, AI’s influence is increasingly felt across various sectors including health, education, transportation, tourism, agriculture, financial services, disaster management and entertainment.
AI is being harnessed for socio-economic transformation drive as well. Against this backdrop, the Ministry emphasized the importance of the appropriate legal frameworks and thus advancing the legal initiative in the field of AI.
