Election Commission officials meet Prime Minister Karki to discuss upcoming polls

KATHMANDU: Officials from the Election Commission held a meeting with Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Tuesday to discuss preparations for the upcoming elections.

The meeting, held at the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers’ Office in Singha Durbar, focused on the implementation of the election schedule and the role of the government and political parties in supporting the process. The Commission had announced the election timetable on Monday, scheduling the polls for  March 5.

Participants in the discussion included Finance Minister Rameshwor Prasad Khanal, Minister for Communication and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel, Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Anil Kumar Sinha, and Election Commission officials led by Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari.

Earlier, on September 23, Election Commission officials had also met Prime Minister Karki to discuss election-related matters. The elections were announced following the formation of the government under former Chief Justice Karki and the dissolution of the House of Representatives after the Gen-Z protests.

Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai stated that the Commission is committed to conducting a free, fair, and cost-effective election, and expects government support in arranging and deploying necessary resources.

The discussions also covered ensuring maximum voter participation, holding consultations with registered political parties before Tihar, and estimating additional resources required based on previous parliamentary elections.

Amendments to the Voter List Act, 2073, are underway to complete the voter list in time for the upcoming elections.
