Nepal exporting 1,000 MW of electricity daily

KATHMANDU: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Executive Director Manoj Silwal has said that Nepal is exporting an average of 1,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity daily, in addition to meeting domestic demand.

Since the beginning of the current fiscal year 2025/26, electricity worth approximately NPR 15 billion has been exported.

The surplus electricity is being sold to India’s Haryana and Bihar states through the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) in both the day-ahead and real-time markets, as well as under a bilateral mid-term power purchase agreement. Additionally, 40 MW is being exported to Bangladesh daily using India’s transmission infrastructure.

Electricity exports to India are transacted in Indian Rupees (INR), while trade with Bangladesh is conducted in US dollars, generating revenue in both currencies.

Nepal has received approval to export up to 1,165 MW of electricity to India and Bangladesh combined.
