NC to hold talks with govt over social media shutdown

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress (NC) has announced plans to hold discussions with the government regarding its recent decision to deactivate multiple social media platforms.

The decision was made during a meeting of the party’s Work Execution Committee held on Sunday at the Budhanilkantha residence of party president Sher Bahadur Deuba.

According to Joint General Secretary Dina Upadhyay, several leaders voiced dissatisfaction over the government’s move, prompting the party to take the issue up with relevant authorities.

“While regulation of social media is necessary, a complete shutdown is not the right approach,” Upadhyay said. She also informed that the meeting resolved to register a party candidate for the upcoming by-election in Provincial Assembly Constituency 2 of Manang, under House of Representatives Constituency 1.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Arjun Narsingh KC said the social media shutdown has sparked widespread public discontent. He emphasized that the Nepali Congress must intervene when the government makes such unilateral and controversial decisions.

KC also criticized the ruling coalition for tabling the Constitutional Council-related bill in Parliament without prior consultation, calling the move inappropriate and undemocratic.
