KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has responded to party leaders urging him to set the date for the party’s 15th General Convention, asserting his right to remain in leadership under both the party charter and the constitution.
Speaking during Monday’s Central Working Committee meeting in Sanepa, Deuba reminded attendees that while the party’s statute sets a four-year term, it allows for a one-year extension, and the constitution permits an additional six months.
“You’re allowed to extend by six months under the constitution. The party statute allows up to four years—I said that myself,” Deuba stated in an audio recording obtained from the meeting. “I follow the constitution,” he added.
The audio clip also captured Deuba joking, “What I do or don’t do is my decision. I’m not someone who steps down just because I’m told to. I’m a difficult person,” prompting laughter from others in the room.
While Deuba didn’t name anyone directly, sources say his remarks were aimed at General Secretary Bishwo Prakash Sharma, who had earlier called on Deuba to take moral responsibility and provide leadership.
