Satyendra-Neha case: MPs demand action against Home Minister Lekhak and IGP Kunwar

KATHMANDU: A protest took place in the Federal Parliament, alleging that police atrocities were committed against Satyendra Kumar Ram (Chamar) and Neha Rauniyar of Sarlahi, who had entered into an inter-caste love marriage, under the instructions of Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.

During the House of Representatives session on Friday, MPs condemned the government’s handling of the case.

Speaking during the zero and special hours of the session, MPs stated that preventing the promotion of inter-caste marriages and using state machinery to protect caste discrimination is a violation of the constitution and human rights.

MP Narayani Sharma condemned the police atrocities that occurred under the direction of the Home Minister, asserting that adults of legal age have the right to make their own decisions.

“I condemn the fact that inter-caste marriages are not being encouraged,” she said. “The government’s actions in this case are utterly condemnable.”

MP Prakash Jwala also condemned the Home Minister’s interference, noting that the Supreme Court had already legalized the marriage of Satyendra and Neha.

“Action should be taken against Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and IGP Basant Kunwar, who ordered the torture of the married couple in this case,” he said.

“Both were tortured after being arrested and brought from Mumbai, India. The Home Minister who issued the instructions and the IGP who took illegal action must be investigated and held accountable.”
