UML youth wing files complaint against Mayor Balen Shah over Facebook posts

KATHMANDU: The National Youth Federation Nepal, affiliated with CPN-UML, has filed a formal complaint with the Cyber Bureau against Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah.

The complaint was lodged on Thursday by the union’s central vice-chairman, Maharaj Gurung. According to the complaint, Mayor Shah allegedly used his personal Facebook account, ‘Balen’, to post objectionable content targeting foreign nations, different political parties, and public officials, which the complainants claim could disrupt public peace.

The complaint states that the posts contained offensive language and messages that could incite social discord. Screenshots of the Facebook posts have been submitted as evidence.

Gurung said that public officials making derogatory remarks about foreign countries or political parties can harm the nation’s social harmony and reputation.

He urged the authorities to take strict action against Shah, including investigation and arrest if necessary. The union also requested the authorities to freeze Shah’s passport to prevent him from leaving the country and to ensure the preservation of evidence.

The complaint cites three main legal violations:

  • Crimes against public peace,
  • Acts of defamation and insult, and
  • Cyber-related offenses.

The submission also included supporting materials, such as screenshots of the Facebook posts, related news reports, and media coverage regarding the content in question.
