116 inmates still missing after escaping from Kanchanpur prison

KANCHANPUR: Authorities have given inmates and detainees who escaped from the Kanchanpur District Prison during last month’s protest until this evening to return voluntarily.

A meeting of the task force formed to search for and apprehend the escaped prisoners on Sunday set a deadline of 5 p.m. today for all male and female escapees to return to custody. Earlier, both the District Administration Office and the prison had issued public notices urging the fugitives to come into contact with authorities.

Acting Prison Administrator Ram Dutta Joshi said that those who fail to return within the given time frame will face legal action under the Prison Act, 2022 and other prevailing laws. He also warned that anyone found harboring, hiding, or assisting the escapees will be prosecuted under existing law.

The prison office has appealed to the families, local communities, and concerned organizations to help bring the fugitives back to prison.

According to Acting Administrator Joshi, 478 inmates escaped during the protest on September 9. Of them, 116 remain at large, while several others have either surrendered voluntarily or been re-arrested by police.
