Law Minister denies plans to legalize polygamy

KATHMANDU: Minister for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Ajay Kumar Chaurasiya has assured that no bill related to polygamy or any legislation that could negatively impact social values and norms will be introduced in the Parliament.

During the House of Representatives session on Tuesday, Minister Chaurasiya requested time from Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire to respond to questions raised during the urgent and zero-hour discussions, where he made this commitment.

“I want to express my firm commitment that no bill that harms society or adversely affects social values, including polygamy, will be brought before this honorable house,” he said.

Minister Chaurasiya also lamented that various interpretations and speculations circulating in the media and on social networks have caused confusion and frustration among the general public.

“Some issues proposed to address difficulties in implementing laws such as the Civil Code have been misinterpreted by some media outlets and social media platforms, which has created confusion and anger among the people,” he said.

The Law Minister clarified that no one would agree to draft laws that disrupt the social order.

“No one can agree to enact laws that undermine the very social fabric,” he said.

Chaurasiya further added that the ministry has taken note of the concerns raised by parliamentarians regarding media reports published while the draft bill was still under consideration by the Cabinet’s legislative committee.
