Home Minister calls for timely passage of Citizenship Amendment Bill



KATHMANDU: Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has urged the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee to pass the Bill to Amend the Nepal Citizenship Act, 2006 within the current parliamentary session.

Speaking at the committee meeting held at Singha Durbar on Friday, Minister Lekhak said the bill is essential for resolving long-standing citizenship issues and should be endorsed promptly.

He highlighted that due to legal hurdles, many young Nepalis remain stateless, and the government has brought the amendment to ensure citizenship for all eligible individuals.

The bill, he said, aims to facilitate the process for children born to Nepali citizens by birth, and to address cases where the father’s identity is unknown, particularly for children born abroad.

In addition, Minister Lekhak informed the committee that a draft bill concerning Non-Resident Nepalis (NRNs) has also been prepared.

Committee Chair Ramhari Khatiwada stated that discussions are being held with the aim of passing the bill within the current session. He added that the next meeting will include consultations with representatives of the Non-Resident Nepali community.
