Ghanshyam Bhusal says top leaders’ retirement causing communist parties to split

KATHMANDU: CPN (Unified Socialist) General Secretary Ghanshyam Bhusal has blamed top leaders’ failure to retire from politics for the current division within communist parties.

Speaking at a press conference in Kathmandu on Wednesday, Bhusal said the parties have fractured due to senior leaders not taking a break from active politics, even as the country faces a critical situation.

Bhusal, who refused to join the unification process of nine parties including the CPN (Maoist Center) and the Unified Socialist, said that although party chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal announced a majority-backed decision to unite with the Maoists, Bhusal and his group rejected it and opted to rebuild their own party.

“The party decided by majority to pursue unification. However, we left on our own terms without bargaining for positions,” he said. “We raised questions about the nine-party unification process, and that is why we chose to step out of it.”

Bhusal also criticized Madhav Kumar Nepal for refusing to resign despite allegations of corruption in the Patanjali land case. “After serious corruption charges, we asked him to step down,” he said, “but he used majority support in the party to reject it.”

He added that even with such serious allegations, Nepal did not resign and relied on internal party strength to maintain his position.
