Rain-causing low-pressure system exits Nepal

KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has announced that the low-pressure system responsible for the recent heavy rainfall has exited Nepal.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Department spokesperson Bibhuti Pokharel confirmed that weather conditions have improved following the weakening of the monsoon system.

However, the department clarified that the monsoon has not yet fully withdrawn from the country, meaning rainfall is still possible—though not as intense or continuous as experienced on October 4.

“Although the rain-causing low-pressure system has exited Nepal and the monsoon has weakened, the Department is continuing to monitor possible weather and flood conditions, as the monsoon season is not yet over. We urge everyone to remain cautious and stay updated with advance warnings through our official website, social media, toll-free number (1155), and SMS alerts,” it said.

According to the Department, the recent weather activity was driven by a low-pressure system that developed over the Bay of Bengal. It remained active in Nepal from the evening of October 3 to the morning of October 4.

During this period, heavy to very heavy rainfall was recorded across most areas of Madhes and Bagmati Provinces, while Koshi Province experienced moderate to very heavy rainfall.

The monsoon typically enters Nepal around June 13; this year, it arrived about 15 days earlier. Its departure, originally expected around October 2, has also been delayed—though such variations occur every year.
