Dang, Banke, Bardiya receive extremely heavy rainfall

KATHMANDU: Parts of western Nepal have been hit by extremely heavy rainfall since last night, with meteorologists warning of continued downpours and heightened flood risks in low-lying areas.

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Dang’s Jalakundi station recorded 227 mm of rain in the past 11 hours. Banke’s Sikta area received 200 mm, while Manpur in Bardiya saw 167 mm of rainfall. In just one hour this morning, Dang recorded more than 25 mm of additional rainfall.

Meteorologist Hari Prasad Dahal from the Weather Forecasting Division said more rain is expected across western Nepal this afternoon and evening as monsoon winds remain active over the region.

Over the past six hours, heavy rain has lashed Tulsipur, Ambapur, Jalakundi (Dang), West Rapti (Banke), Sikta, and Manpur (Bardiya), among other areas.

The Flood Forecasting Division has urged residents of low-lying areas near the Babai, West Rapti, Duduwa, and other smaller rivers to remain on high alert due to the risk of flash floods and inundation.

The monsoon is forecast to remain active for several more days. Most of the country remains under cloud cover, with light to moderate rainfall ongoing in Lumbini, Madhes, Gandaki, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces, and scattered showers reported in Koshi and Bagmati.
