KATHMANDU: Resident doctors, who have been demanding better government-level remuneration, have announced the suspension of all services, except for emergencies, in hospitals across the country starting today (Wednesday).

After halting OPD services yesterday (Tuesday), they issued a statement today confirming that they will cease all services except for emergencies.

The doctors explained that the escalation of their action comes after eight days of protests with no response to their demands.

They are protesting under the banner of the Safe Workplace Struggle Committee for Health Workers.

The protest has been carried out in phases. On Monday, they boycotted OPD services for three hours, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., while demonstrating with banners and placards at health institutions nationwide, excluding medical colleges and specialized institutes.

Previously, the resident doctors had also staged protests by holding ‘pen-down’ actions and wearing aprons.

The Sangharsha Samiti (Struggle Committee) is demanding that the minimum wage for interns and doctors pursuing MD, MS, MDS, DM, and MCH programs be brought in line with government standards.

Additionally, they have called for all post-graduate (PG) programs to be made entirely fee-free and bond-free.
