KATHMANDU: Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has reached out to the government of Nepal regarding the mandatory listing of social media platforms.
According to Information Ministry spokesperson Gajendra Thakur, Meta representatives contacted the ministry’s secretariat to inquire about the required procedures and documents for listing.
“Meta’s representatives have expressed interest and asked about the legal processes and paperwork needed for listing,” Thakur told News Hub. “They have not yet submitted an official application, but we have provided them with the necessary details.”
He added that the ministry has already sent Meta a formal email outlining the documentation and legal requirements.
Facebook, one of the world’s most widely used social media platforms, had previously declined Nepal’s repeated requests for listing.
Meanwhile, another online platform, Hamro Patro, formally submitted its application for listing on Thursday. “We received Hamro Patro’s application after the government’s decision to restrict unlisted platforms. We will move forward once the documents are verified,” Thakur said.
The government has expressed confidence that Meta will also submit an application soon.
