Moderate to heavy rain expected today

KATHMANDU: The Weather Forecasting Division has predicted the possibility of rain in various parts of the country today, both in the afternoon and at night, with heavy rainfall expected in some locations.

According to the 24-hour bulletin issued this morning, the sky will be generally cloudy throughout the country this afternoon. Moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely at many places across all provinces, while heavy rainfall is possible at one or two locations in Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces.

At night, the country will remain mostly cloudy. Moderate rain is expected at many places in Koshi, Madhes, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces, and at some locations in other provinces. Heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur in a few places in Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces.

The Division has stated that the monsoon remains active as the low-pressure trough lies north of Nepal’s Terai region at mean sea level, causing increased cloudiness and rainfall. The Meteorological Department defines ‘daytime’ as the period from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and ‘night’ as from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day.

Rainfall intensity within 24 hours is categorized by the Division as follows: Rainfall less than 10 millimeters is considered light, 10 to 50 millimeters is moderate, 50 to 100 millimeters is heavy, 100 to 200 millimeters is very heavy, and rainfall exceeding 200 millimeters is considered extremely heavy.
