Nepal among most affected by climate change: NC President Deuba

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that Nepal is among the countries most affected by the impacts of climate change, despite contributing negligibly to global carbon emissions.

Receiving a memorandum from the organization “Sathsathai” concerning the global campaign to phase out coal energy, Deuba said Nepal continues to suffer from climate-induced disasters such as floods and landslides. He stressed the need for strong global initiatives to ensure compensation and support for vulnerable nations like Nepal.

Deuba highlighted that rising global temperatures have accelerated the melting of the Himalayan glaciers, leading to unpredictable weather patterns and significantly impacting daily life. He called for increased international attention to Nepal’s climate challenges.

Recalling his participation at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow in 2021, Deuba reiterated Nepal’s national commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2045. He underlined the importance of transitioning toward clean energy, particularly electric power, to meet this goal.
