KMC Chief Administrative Officer releases funds to pay staff

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) employees are set to receive their pending salaries after Chief Administrative Officer Saroj Guragain released the stalled expenses on Friday.

According to KMC spokesperson Dhruv Kumar Kafle, Guragain visited the office in Kamaladi during working hours and signed off on the expense release file.

“He has released the necessary funds,” Kafle told Khabarhub, adding, “All the work that had come to a halt due to the payment issues will now proceed.”

The decision comes after nearly four months of salary benefits being withheld. Employees are expected to receive the payments in their accounts by Monday, as Sunday is a public holiday.

The impasse began after Mayor Balen Shah barred Guragain from performing his duties, accusing him of corruption related to the controversial Kathmandu Tower project and locking his office.

However, three months and 14 days later, Guragain re-entered the KMC office on Thursday with the support of ward chairpersons, employees, Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol, and executive members. The very next day, he approved the fund release.

Despite this development, Mayor Shah’s personal secretary Bhupdev Shah issued a stern warning, stating that those allowing a corrupt individual into the office should also be prepared to face legal consequences if the accusations are proven true.
