Nepal Medical Council suspends decision to revoke licenses of 36 non-resident doctors

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Medical Council has suspended its decision to revoke the licenses of 36 non-resident Nepali doctors following widespread criticism.

The council had earlier decided in two phases to remove the names of 36 doctors from its registration records.

However, after strong opposition to the move, a full meeting of the council held on May 12 decided to retain their names in the registration book for the time being.

Previously, the council had moved to cancel the registrations of 19 doctors who had renounced Nepali citizenship and obtained foreign passports, citing provisions under the Nepal Medical Council Act 2020, Regulations 2024, and the Nepal Citizenship Act 2063 BS.

According to acting registrar Dr Dipendra Pandey, the council will now call on non-resident Nepali doctors across the world to renew or update their registration status.
