KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu District Court has ordered journalist Dil Bhusan Pathak to post bail of Rs 25,000 in connection with a cybercrime case filed by Nepal Police.
The Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police had filed the case against Pathak, accusing him of cybercrime based on a video news report. He was charged as a fugitive defendant in the case.
Judge Khemraj Bhatt of Bench No. 31 issued the bail order following a statement from Pathak during the preliminary detention hearing.
The case stems from a report broadcast by Pathak, which linked Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba’s family, particularly his son Jaiveer Singh Deuba, to investments in the Hilton Hotel. Authorities allege the report violated cybercrime laws.
Media professionals have condemned the case, calling it a misuse of legal provisions intended for other purposes and an attack on press freedom. Despite the criticism, the government proceeded with filing the case in court.
