Media must remain fearless in upholding constitutionally guaranteed rights: President Paudel

KATHMANDU: President Ram Chandra Paudel has expressed confidence that Nepal’s media will continue to work fearlessly in exercising and safeguarding the rights enshrined in the Constitution.

In a message marking World Press Freedom Day (May 3), President Paudel emphasized the need for the media to remain courageous and committed to truth-telling.

He also expressed hope that all three branches of the state would act with vigilance and responsibility in ensuring the public’s right to accurate information.

“The Nepali press has played a crucial role in ending autocratic rule and establishing a federal democratic republic,” the President said.

“Democracy is a prerequisite for free and fair journalism, and press freedom is its cornerstone. The Nepali press has made historic contributions to democratic movements.”

He underscored that press freedom is vital not only for media practitioners but also for enabling citizens to exercise their right to information. A free press, he added, ensures transparency and accountability in governance and supports the democratization of society as a whole.

“The freer, more impartial, and stronger the press, the stronger our democratic system becomes. It is our collective responsibility to create an environment where such a press can thrive,” President Paudel stated.

He affirmed that the Constitution guarantees full freedom of the press and expression, which includes the right to collect and disseminate information without fear or interference.

The President highlighted the importance of pluralistic journalism in ensuring broad public access to diverse news and in giving voice to all communities and social groups.

Amid the rising spread of misinformation—particularly through social media—President Paudel called for independent journalism to play a stronger role in uncovering the truth and countering harmful rumors. He warned that misinformation can mislead citizens and undermine the democratic system.

He concluded by expressing hope that World Press Freedom Day would inspire Nepal’s media professionals to continue their mission of delivering truthful, factual, and credible information, even in the face of growing challenges.
