National Assembly committee finalizes mandatory retirement provision for civil servants



KATHMANDU: The Legislative Management Committee of the National Assembly has endorsed the mandatory retirement provision for civil servants as passed by the House of Representatives, resolving earlier disagreements over the issue.

During a meeting held at Singha Durbar on Tuesday, the committee reached an agreement on the Federal Civil Service Bill, 2023, deciding to implement the retirement age provision in three phases. According to the agreement, once the bill becomes law, civil servants will retire at the age of 58 in the first year, 59 in the second year, and 60 from the third year onward.

If endorsed by both houses of Parliament and authenticated by the President, the law will take effect, requiring employees aged 58 to retire this year, followed by 59 and 60 in the subsequent years, based on the phased implementation.

The provision marks a key decision in finalizing the long-discussed Federal Civil Service Bill, which will come into force only after completing the full parliamentary and presidential process.
