Amanlal Modi’s personal secretary among five arrested for Biratnagar arson during Gen-Z protests



KATHMANDU: Police have arrested Tajim Ansari, the personal secretary of former lawmaker Amanlal Modi, on charges of involvement in the vandalism and arson carried out at several government offices in Biratnagar on September 9 during the Gen-Z movement.

Along with Ansari, local cadres affiliated with the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML have also been detained. According to Morang Police, Awas Paudel, Arun Sah, Rajiv Yadav, and Mahesh Nepal were arrested on Sunday evening.

Police allege all five were involved in setting fire to and vandalizing the Morang District Court and other government offices.

At the time of the incident, Ansari was serving as the personal secretary to then-Maoist Centre (now NCP) lawmaker Amanlal Modi and had also worked with him during Modi’s ministerial tenure. Police stated that public videos from the scene show Ansari directly participating in the arson.

According to police, Awas Paudel is linked to the Nepali Congress, Arun Sah to UML, and Ansari to the Maoist party. All five have been kept in custody at the Morang District Police Office. Police are preparing to file cases against them under criminal disturbance charges.

They will be presented before the Morang District Court today to seek an extension of their remand for further investigation. Police said suspects involved in the September 9 incident are being identified through photo and video evidence.

Earlier, police had arrested 21 individuals on charges of torching a police post and vehicles during the same unrest.
