Pro-monarchy movement has fizzled out and won’t rise again: Home Minister

KATHMANDU: Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has informed the Nepali Congress Central Working Committee that the pro-monarchy movement, which had intensified around March 9, has now lost momentum and is no longer a threat.

During his briefing on Tuesday at the party’s ongoing central committee meeting, Minister Lekhak said, “Some thought the pro-monarchy movement might succeed; there were efforts to reverse the political system. But that movement is now defunct—it cannot rise again.”

He reported that anti-republic activities had been neutralized and noted a decline in religious provocations that had emerged in certain areas. “Although there was a possibility of religious unrest in some parts of the country, that threat has now passed,” he said.

Lekhak also warned of ongoing risks from cross-border activities and highlighted pressing domestic challenges such as road accidents, drug abuse, suicide, and cybercrime. “These are currently among the most pressing challenges for the ministry,” he said, adding that efforts are underway to address them.

He shared that even individuals involved in old criminal cases are being arrested, and that the ministry is actively working to reduce the four key crimes mentioned.

Reflecting on the situation when he took office, Lekhak said, “There were 17 groups actively protesting at the time, including those related to cooperatives and loan sharks. Today, Maitighar Mandala is empty. The royalists have also disappeared. That doesn’t mean everything is perfect—but we are continuously trying to improve. We welcome your suggestions.”
