KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has stated that although the monsoon entered Nepal 15 days earlier than the average onset date, it is expected to remain inactive for the next seven days, resulting in reduced rainfall and a rise in temperatures.
The monsoon entered Nepal from the eastern region, specifically Koshi Province, on the night of May 30.
However, it has now weakened temporarily. According to meteorologist Hari Prasad Dahal, while the average onset date of the monsoon in Nepal is June 13, it arrived early this year, but has since become inactive.
“Only the eastern parts have experienced the monsoon so far. The rest of the country is still awaiting its arrival,” Dahal said. “Heavy rainfall on the first day of the monsoon in the east already caused some impacts.”
Flood expert Binod Parajuli reported that more than 200 mm of rain fell in the eastern region on the day of onset, which raised river levels and caused some areas to flood.
Despite this temporary lull, the department has projected that Nepal is likely to receive above-average rainfall during the four-month monsoon period. Specifically, there is a 55–65% probability of higher-than-average rainfall in eastern Karnali, northern Lumbini, and much of Gandaki Province.
To enhance preparedness, the department has started daily briefings at 11 AM, sharing weather forecasts, warnings, and hydrological updates directly with media outlets and stakeholders. The initiative aims to improve communication and response during the monsoon season.
The department is also operating 24-hour toll-free numbers: 1155 for weather updates and 1155 for flood-related information.
