17th National Library Day being celebrated today

KATHMANDU: The 17th National Library Day is being observed today with various programs across the country.

The day, celebrated annually on Bhadra 15 in the Lunar calendar, marks the day in 1869 BS when King Griwanayuddha Bikram Shah authorized the establishment of libraries.

This year’s Library Day is celebrated under the theme “Library for Continuous Education” and is coordinated by a main organizing committee led by Dr. Deepak Kafley, Secretary at the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology.

The committee is hosting an event to honor the best librarians and readers.

A survey conducted by the Ministry of Education in 2078/79 revealed that there are 928 community and public libraries in the country, but only 227 are functioning properly.

Rajendra Pandey, General Secretary of the Nepal Community Library Association, stresses the need for all libraries to be fully operational and advocates for policies that encourage the establishment of new libraries in areas where they are needed.
