Urgent call to address climate change impacts in mountainous regions

KATHMANDU: Priority should be given to programs aimed at mitigating the impacts of climate change in mountainous regions, as their very existence is threatened by various climate-induced challenges.

During a discussion on ‘Impacts of Climate Change in Mountainous Regions and Mitigation Measures’ organized by the Federalism Enablement and National Concerns Committee of the National Assembly today, speakers underscored the urgent need to protect mountains from the crises brought about by climate change.

Committee Chairperson Sonam Geljen Sherpa stressed that all three tiers of government should take proactive measures to alleviate the problems caused by climate change in mountainous regions.

He stated, “UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has closely observed the challenges faced by mountain communities and has raised the issue at the international level to address the region’s problems. We must unite and launch a ‘Save Mountain Campaign’.”

Chairperson Sherpa highlighted the importance of initiating policies to address these issues.

Similarly, Committee members Mohammad Khalid and Indira Devi Poudel expressed the opinion that coordination among all levels of government and with other mountainous countries worldwide is essential to address climate change-induced challenges.

Warning of the risks of melting snow and the potential bursting of glacial lakes in mountainous regions due to climate change, Vice-Chairperson of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality, Tashi Lhamu Sherpa, emphasized the importance of timely vigilance from all parties.

Vice-Chairperson Sherpa remarked, “The federal government should take the initiative to have rescue teams on standby to aid climbers. We are prepared to collaborate,” urging the installation of early warning systems at various locations to reduce disaster risks in mountainous regions.
