U-19 World Cup: Nepal locking horns with B’desh today

KATHMANDU: Nepal is set to take on Bangladesh in the Super Six stage of the ICC U-19 World Cup in South Africa today.

This will be Nepal’s opening match against Bangladesh, followed by a face-off against India on Friday (February 2).

Having secured a spot in the Super Six by finishing third in Group D, Nepal faced setbacks against New Zealand and Pakistan, losing by 64 runs and 5 wickets, respectively.

However, a victory against Afghanistan by 1 wicket propelled Nepal into the Super Six.

The Super Six stage features 12 teams, with Nepal, India, Pakistan, New Zealand, Bangladesh, and Ireland forming one group, while South Africa, England, West Indies, Australia, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe comprise the other group.

The top two teams from each Super Six group will advance to the semi-finals, with points from the group stage factored into the calculations.

India, with five U-19 World Cup titles, leads the historical records, followed by Australia with three and Pakistan with two.

Bangladesh, South Africa, West Indies, and England have each won the title once.

Nepal’s U-19 cricket team, making its seventh appearance in the World Cup after an eight-year hiatus, is celebrating the achievement of reaching the Super Six by overcoming Afghanistan, a Test nation.

Nepal earned its U-19 World Cup qualification by defeating the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the finals of the U-19 Asia Qualifier.
