KATHMANDU: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has said federalism is a warranted system of governance for the country.

In his address to a reception organised on Wednesday by the Federation of Journalists (FNJ) Central Committee on the occasion of the Dashain, Tihar, Nepal Sambat, and Tihar festivals, the Minister, who is also the Government Spokesperson, said the system was introduced and implemented following the failure of previous systems.

However, he added, the old structural system and the new governance set-up have not been adjusted, creating challenges for the new system implementation.

The Minister used the forum to stress the need to promote national unity by acknowledging the existence of all in a society marked by cultural, language, religious, caste, and geographical diversities. He also echoed the need to enhance social harmony based on Nepali society’s special features.

According to the minister, federalism is meant for exploring and establishing equality and unity within diversities.

As the Minister highlighted, maintaining inter-governmental relations is one of the challenges of the hour during the implementation of this system and the federal government is responsible for bridging this gap.

The government Spokesperson expected critical feedback from the media so that the government could not deviate from its track and could work for good governance. He wanted media to be more autonomous, independent, and systematized while being self-regulated. The Minister insisted on the need for transparency in each sector.

At the programme chaired by FNJ Acting Chair Bala Adhikari FNJ former Presidents Taranath Dahal, Dharmendra Jha, Bishnu Nisthuri, and Dr Mahendra Bista, FNJ central advisor Nirmala Sharma, Sancharika Samuha Chair Bimala Tumkhewa and Chairperson of Minimum Wages Fixation Committee, Sangita Khadka, extended festival best wishes to media professionals on the occasion.
