Home Ministry directed to repatriate absconding cooperative fraud suspects from abroad

KATHMANDU: The Parliamentary Probe Special Committee on misuse of savings funds in cooperatives has directed the Ministry of Home Affairs to facilitate the return of absconding individuals involved in cooperative fraud, including GB Rai, to Nepal.

During a meeting held on Monday with the Home Minister, Home Secretary, and Chief of Police, the Committee revealed that 18 suspects in the cooperative fraud cases are currently abroad.

The committee has instructed the Home Minister to ensure their repatriation to Nepal.

The list of 18 suspects has been provided to the Home Minister, and the Committee’s coordinator, Surya Thapa, has confirmed that efforts are underway to bring these individuals back.

Among those implicated, GB Rai from Okhaldhunga is notably prominent.

Rai is accused of orchestrating fraud involving billions in cooperative savings and is believed to be in hiding in Malaysia.

Former Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane mentioned that efforts are being made to apprehend Rai and return him to Nepal.

He also indicated that arrangements are being discussed with those currently imprisoned for similar offenses.

Coordinator Thapa has noted that since the formation of the investigation committee, there have been reports of some cooperative owners returning the embezzled funds to the savers.

The Home Minister has emphasized that the Committee on will serve as a guide for the government’s actions on this issue.

He assured that the government is committed to addressing the cooperative problems and will implement the committee’s directives.
