TOKYO: The Tokyo Conference 2024, organized by the International Network for Nepali Journalists (INNJA), kicked off today in Tokyo, Japan, with an array of discussions and advocacy initiatives scheduled until March 1.

Inaugurating the event under the theme, ‘The Impact of Social Media, Ethical Journalism Practices, and the Future of Media Technology,’ Nepal’s ambassador to Japan, Durga Bahadur Subedi, emphasized the pivotal role of journalists in strengthening bilateral ties between Nepal and Japan.

Ambassador Subedi commended INNJA’s efforts in providing humanitarian aid and support to journalists facing difficulties and crises, urging other organizations to join hands with INNJA to achieve its objectives.

Highlighting Japan’s substantial assistance to Nepal across various sectors including health, education, and infrastructure, Ambassador Subedi underscored the extension of Nepal-Japan relations to a people-to-people level.

Moreover, he acknowledged INNJA’s collaboration with the Federation of Nepali Journalists in promoting Nepali journalism and enhancing the capacity of Nepali journalists.

INNJA’s senior vice president, Bishnu Shital, along with other key members, deliberated on the organization’s role in strengthening Nepal-Japan relations and uniting Nepali-origin journalists worldwide.

Established in 2018 with its headquarters in America, INNJA operates with chapters across continents, offering humanitarian aid to Nepali journalists during crises. Notably, during the COVID-19 pandemic, it provided financial assistance to 100 journalists in Nepal through fellowships.

INNJA’s objectives include unifying Nepali-origin journalists globally, promoting ethical journalism standards, empowering Nepali youth in journalism, and fostering diversity in journalism, reflecting its commitment to advancing the profession and supporting journalists in Nepal and beyond.
