National Mushroom Day to be celebrated on December 30 at Bhrikuti Mandap

KATHMANDU: The Mushroom Producers Association, Nepal, has announced that National Mushroom Day will be celebrated on December 30 at Bhrikuti Mandap, with a variety of exhibitions and cultural performances planned for the event.

At a press conference held today, Association President Santosh Karki revealed that the fair will feature 40 halls showcasing mushroom-related exhibitions.

Visitors can explore practical demonstrations on the production of mushrooms such as Gobre, Kanya, King Oyster, and Shitake.

Additionally, a wide range of mushroom dishes will be displayed and offered for free tasting.

The event, scheduled from 10 am to 5 pm, will include an exhibition of essential items used in mushroom cultivation and special cultural performances featuring national artists.

Entry to the fair is free for all attendees.

According to the organizers, approximately 15,000 visitors are expected to attend the fair, with an estimated budget of Rs. 2.5 million.

Karki highlighted the growing significance of mushroom farming in Nepal, noting that around 35,000 farmers are currently involved in this sector.

The nationwide production turnover for various mushroom varieties stands at Rs 15 billion, with 67 labs actively producing mushroom seeds.

Mushroom farming has expanded to 70 districts across Nepal, with commercial production thriving in 40 districts.

National Mushroom Day was first declared at the provincial level by the Bagmati Province government on December 30, 2019, following a request from the association and farmers.

This decision coincided with the Mechi Mahakali ‘National Mushroom Awareness Campaign,’ which emphasized the importance of promoting mushroom farming and its benefits.

The association hopes that National Mushroom Day will continue to highlight the significance of mushroom farming, encourage sustainable agricultural practices, and inspire more farmers to join this thriving industry.
