Heavy snowfall disrupts life in Humla

KATHMANDU: The highlands of Karnali Province, including the Himalayan district of Humla, have been blanketed by heavy snowfall since Friday night, marking the third snowfall in the region this year.

In the district headquarters of Simkot, four inches of snow accumulated by Saturday morning, while Namkha Rural Municipality saw snowfall reaching up to two feet.

The intense weather has significantly impacted daily life, with residents struggling to venture outdoors due to freezing temperatures, which have plunged below zero degrees Celsius.

The snowfall has paralyzed the district’s only mode of connection to the outside world—air service. Flights in and out of Humla have been suspended, leaving the district isolated.

Local resident Gaugora Bohara described the challenges posed by the snowfall, noting that citizens are confined to their homes to avoid the extreme cold.

While the snowfall has disrupted daily activities, it has brought hope to farmers in the region. According to local farmers, the snow is expected to enhance crop production, offering a silver lining amidst the harsh weather.

“This snowfall is crucial for improving soil moisture and ensuring better harvests,” said Bohara, highlighting the benefits to agricultural livelihoods.
