TAPLEJUNG: A group of Maoist activists staged a protest against the construction of a cable car project in Taplejung on November 8, 2024.

The demonstration, which took place near the Nepal-China border, was organized by members of the Maoist Center party, who voiced strong opposition to the project’s progress.

The protesters raised slogans targeting local political leaders, particularly the Chairman of the CPN-UML in Taplejung district and the local Mayor, accusing them of stalling the foundation ceremony of the cable car project.

The project, which has sparked controversy, is being carried out by the Himalayan Construction Company, a private firm owned by prominent businessman Chandra Prasad Dhakal.

Dhakal is a key figure in Nepal’s business community and serves as the President of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI).

He is also known for his close ties to former Prime Minister KP Oli and is believed to have strong connections with China.

The proposed cable car is planned to connect the Fungling Municipal area of Taplejung to the revered Pathibhara Temple, a popular pilgrimage site in the region.

The project is seen as a significant infrastructure development but has faced opposition from various quarters, including the Maoists, due to concerns over its environmental and political implications, particularly given Dhakal’s ties to China.
