ILAM: Farmer Man Bahadur Rai of Badare in Rong rural municipality-1 produced 15 tons of cardamom in 12 ropani of land this year.
And as a result, he was selected as one of the ‘Guru Kissan’ or leading farmers of the rural municipality.
The rural municipality has introduced a new concept to promote productivity by recognizing farmers who produce more in less area of land as ‘Guru Kissan’.
“There are 4,500 farmers in our rural municipality and we have planned to recognize about 300 ‘guru kissan”, said Chair of the Rural Municipality Manikumar Syangbo Subas.
The Guru Kissan procedures have been approved by the municipal executive to bring uniformity in production, quality and regular production of cash crops in the rural municipality.
Syangbo said that this concept was put forward to enlist the hardworking and leading farmers who produce more with less land.
They will also receive an insignia along with an identity card. “Guru Kissan are hardworking farmers, who are expected to be role model for others”, he said.
Some of the farmers here have not been able to produce 10 tons of cardamom by farming even in an area of 30 ropani.
“If fertilizers and irrigation are applied on the right time it is possible to get a lot of production even in a small area”, said farmer Rai.
