Alarming Rise in Road Fatalities: 88 lives lost in Kathmandu Valley in six months

KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Valley has witnessed a disturbing surge in road accidents, claiming the lives of 88 individuals in the first half of the current fiscal year, according to the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office.

The data reveals a total of 5,865 road accidents, resulting in 148 critical injuries and 4,438 minor injuries.

Motorcyclists and pedestrians emerge as the most vulnerable groups, constituting the majority of the fatal incidents.

Punya Prasad (Saroj) Sitaula, Senior Vice-President of the National Federation of Nepal Transport Entrepreneurs, attributes the high casualty rate to the increased speed of motorcycles and scooters, coupled with pedestrians recklessly crossing roads.

In response to the concerning statistics, Senior Superintendent of Police Rajendra Prasad Bhatta, spokesperson of the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office, outlined ongoing efforts to address the issue.

“Various awareness programs are being conducted to curb vehicle accidents in the Valley. Stringent measures include alcohol consumption checks, speed regulations limiting vehicles to 50 kilometers per hour, and inspections of vehicle conditions,” he stated.

As road safety remains a paramount concern, authorities are intensifying their initiatives to reduce accidents and ensure safer road practices in the Kathmandu Valley.
