Speaker pledges no laws capable of curtailing Press freedom



KATHMANDU: Speaker Devraj Ghimire has said no laws capable of imposing restrictions on press freedom will be enacted.

In his address to a ceremony held to present certificates to the newly elected office-bearers of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) here today, the Speaker said he is committed to strengthening freedom of the Press and no such laws will be formulated against the principle and practice of the free Press.

“The Constitution of Nepal has guaranteed full freedom of the press,” he said and stressed on implementing this provision in practice as well.

FNJ newly elected Chair Nirmala Sharma vowed to fight for the cause of press freedom and the professional rights and security of journalists.

FNJ former Chair Harihar Birahi advised the stakeholders concerned including the FNJ new leadership to develop the organisation as a common forum for entire journalists.
