KATHMANDU: Nepali athlete Erika Gurung, the silver medalist at the 20th Asia Senior Karate Championship in Hangzhou, China, returned home to a hero’s welcome on Tuesday.

Greeted by a crowd of well-wishers, Gurung arrived at Tribhuvan International Airport, where she was received by National Sports Council Member Secretary Tanka Lal Ghising, Nepal Karate Federation President Yuvraj Lama, and other top sports officials.

Gurung’s achievement marks a historic moment for Nepal, as no Nepali athlete had ever won a medal at the prestigious Asian Championship, organized by the Asian Karate Federation.

Her victory in Hangzhou cements her status as one of the nation’s rising sports stars, following her first international triumph at the 19th Asian Games, where she also claimed silver.
