Melamchi water supply to Kathmandu suspended amid monsoon hazards



KATHMANDU: The Melamchi Water Supply to the Kathmandu Valley has been temporarily halted due to the risks posed by the monsoon season.

The Melamchi Water Supply Board announced today that they are suspending water supply from the Melamchi River in Sindhupalchowk.

Executive Director Ratna Lamichhane stated that heavy rainfall has caused the river to become turbid, necessitating the closure of the water supply to the Valley.

Supply will resume once the weather conditions improve. Initially planned for June 13, the suspension was postponed due to lack of significant rainfall.

However, recent developments prompted the Board to take action last Friday.

The government oversees Melamchi water supplies during the monsoon season to protect infrastructure.

According to the Meteorological Forecasting Division, the monsoon arrived in Nepal on June 10, earlier than expected, and typically ends on October 2.

Management consultants and the Asian Development Bank advised suspending supplies to safeguard project structures from monsoon-related risks.
