Government to provide compensation for families of missing persons in natural disasters

KATHMANDU: The government will offer compensation to the families of missing persons in natural disasters, treating them as deceased, according to Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.

Responding to queries raised by lawmakers in the House of Representatives (HoR) meeting on Tuesday, Home Minister Lekhak stated that the government will provide relief to the family members of those who have gone missing due to natural disasters since June 10 this year, treating them as deceased.

According to Home Minister Lekhak, 1,592 natural disasters have been recorded since June 10.

These incidents have resulted in 130 deaths and 144 injuries.

Additionally, the whereabouts of 48 individuals are yet to be confirmed.

The minister further reported that landslides and floods have caused the destruction of 213 houses, 84 animal shelters, 43 bridges, and two government offices so far this year.

The disasters have displaced 4,400 families across the country, with 1,059 of them being relocated to safer grounds.

Minister Lekhak also informed that 7,169 security personnel from the Nepal Police and 3,956 from the Armed Police Force (APF) were deployed for search and rescue missions during this period.
