KATHMANDU: In the last fiscal year (mid-July 2023 to mid-July 2024), a total of 177 human rights violations were recorded in Koshi Province.

Despite this, recommendations for action regarding 111 of these incidents have not been implemented, and 49 cases have only been partially addressed, according to data from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

Out of the 14 districts in the province, Morang reported the highest number of incidents, with 27 cases.

The NHRC has expressed concern over the lack of implementation of its recommendations.

During a program titled “Discussions about the Implementation of NHRC Recommendations,” held by the NHRC in Biratnagar, it was revealed that 72% of the NHRC’s recommendations for addressing human rights violations in the province were not implemented by the end of the last fiscal year.

NHRC member Manoj Duwadi emphasized the urgency of implementing these recommendations to reinforce the rule of law and ensure the protection of human rights.

Chief Secretary of the Koshi Province Government, Kedarnath Sharma, affirmed the provincial government’s readiness to cooperate with the NHRC in promoting citizens’ human rights.

Additionally, Usha Jha, Deputy Chief of the District Coordination Committee in Morang, and Labadev Dhungana, Acting Chair of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) in Koshi Province, highlighted the importance of collective efforts to build a violence-free society.

During the program, NHRC investigation officer Shyam Babu Kafley presented a working paper on the status of the NHRC’s recommendation implementations.

The event was attended by representatives of conflict-affected families, various human rights organizations, government officials, security agencies, and journalists.
