KATHMANDU: Maoist Centre Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” has reiterated his party’s demand for a directly-elected presidential system and a fully proportional electoral system.

Speaking at an event in Kathmandu, Prachanda emphasized that the party’s earlier proposal, which served as a dissenting view during the drafting of the constitution, will be revived.

He argued that certain factions are dissatisfied with the rights granted to the people under the current constitution and are attempting to undermine these rights in the guise of constitutional amendments.

“Efforts to amend this constitution without the consent of the Maoist party are unacceptable. No one has the right to alter the constitution without our consensus,” he stated.

However, he clarified that the Maoist party is open to amendments if genuine efforts are made toward this goal.

Prachanda expressed the party’s eagerness to amend the constitution to forge a progressive path forward.

He also claimed that the political corruption plaguing the country stems from the existing electoral system, asserting the need for a complete shift to a total proportional electoral framework.
